Schuljak Portraits

December 21, 2010

The Schuljak family called me a week ago looking for some last minute Christmas portraits taken on Mt. Washington overlooking the Pittsburgh skyline.  Flying in from Texas, the family was only going to be in Pittsburgh for a few days so there weren’t many options when it came to opportunities to shoot.  We picked a day and prayed the weather would cooperate.  Well, as you will see, the whether didn’t exactly cooperate, but I think it made the portraits that much more eye catching.  What do you think?

That Just Happened

March 30, 2010

Today’s posted image is one of many examples I have of photographs that “just happened.”  There are some images that take much time and planning.  Between deciding the creatively correct aperture, shutter speed, sensor speed, etc. and then finding the best composition, some photographs are simply calculated to come out well.  However, on occasion, there are those photographs that just happen and remind me that I just need to squeeze that shutter button regardless of my current settings and just “see what happens.”

This particular image occurred while walking across the Roberto Clemente bridge towards the north shore.  I spent the majority of the day in town photographing the buildings, when a Gateway Clipper boat crossed underneath me.  Not having the tripod set up, I initially hesitated to photograph the boat, however, I’m glad my hesitation didn’t win the battle and I followed my gut instinct instead.  If I say so myself, I think the shot turned out fantastic.

What say you?

Let’s Go Bucs!

March 12, 2010

I am a baseball fan.  I love the game.  However, I’m an even greater Pirate fan!  Don’t get me wrong, I can get into a ball game regardless of who’s playing, but nothing is more enjoyable to me than sitting at PNC Park watching our very own Pittsburgh Pirates take the field.  And nothing beats Opening Day!  The sudden change in the weather here in Pittsburgh has me really looking forward to April 5th, the annual start to my frequent afternoons/evenings at the ballpark.  In honor of the coming season and hope that 2010 is the year we’ve all been waiting for here’s a few photographs from last season at PNC Park.

Few words are able to describe the scene of a new sun rising over a beautiful landscape, especially when that landscape is the Pittsburgh skyline.  No matter how difficult it might be to get out of bed early enough to experience a view like this, it’s definitely worth the trouble.
